BEST BEACHES IN TURKEY

Eight countries share a border with Turkey: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Bulgaria, Greece, and Georgia but there is still plenty of incredible Turkish coastline to enjoy – over 8,000 kilometers of it in fact!

We think Turkey’s coastline has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Each has something different to offer (and sometimes a combination!): history, nature, watersports, relaxation or food.

If you’re wondering why we chose Turkish cotton for our Hammamas beach towels then the answer is simple. Turkish cotton is a premium long-fibre cotton. The extra long fibres mean there are fewer joins and this makes the cotton stronger and smoother than regular cotton. Because of the uniqueness of these threads, Turkish cotton becomes even softer and more comfortable over time as it’s used and washed.

So start browsing our range and read about some of the places we’ve explored on our travels in search of the best Turkish cotton for our Hammamas towels.

Kaputaş Beach

Let’s start on Turkey’s southern coast, also known as the Turquoise coast (#nofilterneeded). Kaputaş Beach is a small beach between Kaş and Kalkan in southwestern Turkey formed by a gorge that opens out into a stretch of sand. This means it’s tucked away…below 187 steps that you have to climb back up again at the end of your visit. We warned you!

Still, we like it because it’s a popular beach with locals (and we consider ourselves a bit of a local here), which gives it a different feel to many of Turkey’s other beaches; and if you go on a windy day there are fabulous waves.

Alacati

Facing the Aegean, Alacati provides the ideal wind conditions for kitesurfing, sailing and windsurfing – so that’s where we go when we’re feeling more adventurous. We also love the sandy beaches and mineral springs here. Icmeler is also a good choice for water sports and we love water skiing and diving here. And when you come to the surface, you’ll be mesmerised by the pine forests which surround three sides of this unique Turkish beach.

Any outdoor sports on sunny days mean you should be thinking about your SunSmart routine. You might not have considered it but if you ski you are at even more risk – UV levels are higher in alpine regions than at sea level; plus the snow is highly reflective which can cause your skin to burn. Reapply sunscreen every two hours or more often if you’re sweating a lot.

Patara

Turkey’s longest beach, Patara, is a good choice too. It’s 12km of pretty lucious white sand. On one side you’ll see mountains and on the other sand dunes and mimosa bushes. This was once the harbour area of Patara and is now designated a national park so you’ll probably see lots of wildlife, especially birds and the endangered Caretta Caretta as this is their breeding ground.

The guy we all know as Santa Claus, St. Nicholas, was born here in Patara on the Southwestern part of Turkey. Interested in more facts about Turkey! Read our Christmas blog #christmasinjuly

Çirali

We don’t have favourites at Hammamas but some say Cirali is ‘The Ultimate Beach’. Why? Well there are several reasons – the soft sands, the miles of orange groves and shady gardens hung with hammocks and lanterns. What we love, is to stay in the Treehouses that hang almost secretly just back from the beachfront itself.

If you’re an eco-warrior or foodie then you might like it here because of its environmental commitment and amazing array of fresh food from salads to filled gözleme flatbreads.

A short walk to the western end of the beach takes you to the ruins of ancient Olympos. If you feel like a bit more history then bike and hike out to Chimaera, where flaming gases vent from an apparently haunted hillside – OOOOOooooooo!

Whatever your choice, they definitely make our list of the most amazing beaches in the world and  ooooze relaxation and calm.

Bodrum

You can’t avoid ancient ruins when exploring Turkey. In Bodrum you’ll find the original mausoleum, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and the Castle of St Peter. What you’ll also find here is a bit more sophistication and Turkey’s night life with more than one night club!

Before we go, we should mention the Hammams. Not to be confused with our 100% Turkish cotton beach towels, a Hammam is where you should go for a scrub, some whipped-cream-like-suds and massage. It’s the ultimate in rejuvenation. Firstly, you sweat it all out, wrapped in a pestemal (a thin cotton towel), in a sauna or steam bath. Then you lay on a warm marble plinth where you get treated to an all-over exfoliation treatment with olive oil soap. And finally – the best bit – the massage.

Famed for its beaches, food and weather, Turkey really does deliver the unique atmosphere of the Middle East. So now when you see the label on your Hammamas saying “100% Turkish cotton” you can also picture the amazing place it’s made.

With love from the Hammamas team x
